Bursaries and Scholarships

Ada Mackenzie Memorial Foundation

The Ada MacKenzie Memorial Foundation (AMMF) was set up in memory of Miss Ada MacKenzie, who was one of Canada's premier female amateur athletes who passed away in 1971. The aim of the Foundation is to provide financial assistance to athletes with a disability. Funds are made available through CWSA to wheelchair athletes attending an educational institution to assist them in their competitive endeavours. One recipient of funds raised by the Foundation is the Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association (CWSA).  The number of athletes and amount of the awards receiving the AMMF Awards will be determined each year based upon the level of funds available and the number of qualified athletes.

 

Value of Individual Awards

In general, the awards shall have the following dollar values:

Students undertaking full-time University programs: $ 1200 - 2000

Students undertaking part-time University programs: $ 800 - 1000

Students undertaking full-time community college (CEGEP): $ 800 - 1200

Students undertaking part-time community college (CEGEP): $ 600 - 800

Students undertaking full-time high school programs: $ 200 - 400

 

Eligibility

The applicant must be a wheelchair athlete with a disability and a member in good standing with their affiliated province/territory and the CWSA. The athlete must be enrolled full-time or part-time in an educational program for the 2003-2004 academic year.

Note: Sport Canada carded athletes are not eligible for this bursary.

 

Deadline

The deadline to apply is October 31 of each year, please contact the Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association for more information.

 

Allan Angus Rogers Wheelchair Athletes Fund: Disability Bursary

For athletes with a disability attending the University of Toronto - administered by the Office of Admissions and Awards, University of Toronto
Although the name of the bursary states Wheelchair, it is open to any University of Toronto student athlete with a disability who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, full-time or part-time student registered in an undergraduate or graduate program at the University of Toronto.
 

Criteria

The criteria includes financial need and contribution to their community through volunteer work or demonstrated leadership ability, as well as maintaining satisfactory academic standing. There is a potential of $1500.00 annually.

Athletes Can (Team Investors Group Amateur Athletes Fund)

In keeping with their commitment to Amateur Sport in Canada, Investor's Group established an Amateur Athletes bursary fund for Canada's top amateur athletes.  Working in partnership with Athletes CAN, the fund awards twenty bursaries of $5,000 to Canadian amateur athletes each year. The bursary selection committee is made up of active and retired national team athletes and officials from Investors Group and Athletes CAN.  Athletes CAN and Bell have entered a seven-year partnershipwoth an estimated $5 million a year which allows athletes to connect with parents, coaches and friends through telecommunications hardware, airtime and Internet access.  This opportunity is administered by Athletes CAN at www.athletescan.com.
 

Eligibility

The bursary fund is open to any active senior national team athlete who:

is deemed eligible and is in good standing by the appropriate National Sport Federation representing the sport. This includes Paralympic, Pan American, Commonwealth, Olympic and National team athletes

is a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant permanently residing in Canada

is committed to training and competing for Canada in the upcoming year

has a gross income, from all sources, in the preceding year of less than $50,000; any athlete who has income greater than $50,000 annually and who can demonstrate financial need may be eligible

 

Petro Canada Olympic Torch Scholarship Fund

Since this funds inception in 1988, over 1876 scholarships, valued at over $5.3 million, have been awarded to Canadian student- athletes and Coaches. This fund provides tuition support in addition to athlete development funding support for high performance student athletes and special needs funding for coaches. This scholarship is administered by the Canadian Olympic Committee at www.coa.ca.

 

Eligibility for Athletes

To be eligible for funding, an athlete must be:

a Canadian citizen

a member of a Canadian national team in a Pan American, Paralympic, winter and/or summer Olympic event

not receiving AAP carding with tuition support

attending a Canadian high school, university, college, and/or recognized educational institution

 

Eligibility for Coaches

a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant

an NSF recognized coach working towards their level 4 NCCP at an NCI or a graduate student in a coaching-related field

ranked and endorsed by their NCI director

not receiving AAP carding with tuition support

 

Terry Fox Humanitarian Award

Scholarships for graduating secondary level students and those studying towards a first University degree or diploma in a Canadian post-secondary institution.  This scholarship is administered by The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award at www.terryfox.org.

 

Grants

CAAWS (Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport and Physical Activity)

This grant offers Numerous awards, and grants available to women.  For example:

 

WISE (Women in Sport Encouragement) Fund

Currently 8 grants of $1000 are available to active girls and women and/or organizations offering sport programs targeted to girls and women. This fund has been developed in response to the ongoing financial need within the sport community and will help fund MSO-NSO-PSO sport initiatives in an effort to help financially assist members of the sport community in Canada.  This fund is administered by Canadian Association For the Advancement of Women In Sport and Physical Activity at www.caaws.ca.

 

Tennis Canada Participation Development Program

Tennis Canada is committed to fostering the growth and development of Wheelchair Tennis in Canada. Through increased awareness, coaching education, new training programs, facility upgrades and introductory clinics, the number of participants will increase.  To stimulate this growth, Tennis Canada has designed the Participation Development Grant Program. If you qualify in one of the following areas, or feel you have a valid initiative, please complete the grant application process.

 

Eligibility

i.

New Training Program

If you are an administrator, certified coach, or player who is creating a new wheelchair Tennis program in your area, you may qualify. The program must be ongoing, involve a Tennis Canada certified coach and be offered at a normal rate. Grants are given to a maximum of $1,000.

ii.

Introductory Clinic

If you are a coach, administrator or player who is offering an introductory clinic to attract new wheelchair Tennis players to the game, you may qualify. The clinic must use a Tennis Canada certified coach and offer a follow-up program afterwards. Grants are given to a maximum of $500.

iii.

Wheelchair Tennis Promotions

If you are designing and conducting a promotional awareness campaign specific to Wheelchair Tennis, you may qualify. The program may include the media, posters, brochures or booklets. Grants are given to a maximum of $500.

iv.

Coaching Education Program

If you are conducting coaching awareness and training programs specific to Wheelchair Tennis, you may qualify. The goal is to expose as many coaches as possible to wheelchair Tennis and provide them with the basic coaching techniques and resources. Grants are given up to a maximum of $750.

v.

Facility Upgrades

If you are a club owner who wants to make upgrades to your Tennis facility to accommodate wheelchair Tennis players, you may qualify. That may include building accessible washrooms, adding ramps or widening doorways. Grants are given up to a maximum of $500.

vi.

Other Initiatives

If you have another initiative that you feel stimulates the growth of wheelchair Tennis, you may qualify. Grants are given up to a maximum of $500.

 

Grant Application Process

To access the program, complete the application form with a detailed budget.  There is no application deadline for this program.  This grant is administered by Tennis Canada at www.tenniscanada.com.

 

Financial and Resource Assistance

Athletes International

This assistance program strives to meet the unique needs of athletes, coaches and officials in the field of sport. They support and enhance athletes in their pursuit of personal excellence in the form of products and services from their partners in various fields of business. Services are available to all athletes and participants in a Provincial, National and International sports organization.  This fund is administered by Athletes International at www.athletes-int.com.

 

Canadian Sports Centres

The purpose of this program is to contribute towards an enhanced training environment for current and potential high level athletes and coaches striving for top performances in competitions. Centres are located across Canada.  This fund administered by Canadian Sports Centres at www.canadiansportcentre.com

 

See You in Athens Canadian Athletes Fund

Funds from this program are allocated for individuals at $5,000, for pairs at $7,000, and for teams at $10,000.  This fund is administered See You In Athens Canadian Athletes Fund at www.seeyouinathens.com.

 

Eligibility

Applications will be accepted from any active national team athlete who is training to represent Canada in international competitions in Athens. NOTE: Winter athletes will be able to apply for funding following the 2004 Olympics and Paralympics.

Foundation for Athletes and Sport Training (FAST)

FAST gives annual awards directly to developing athletes across the country. These awards help them on the journey to qualify for a national team by putting them on the FAST TRACK to success. To demonstrate sustained commitment to the dream, FAST will support these athletes until they make the national team. This program is administered by FAST at www.fastcanada.org.

 

Awards and Recognition

James Worall Award

The James Worrall Award, through the James Worrall Athlete Development Fund, has disbursed over $80,000 to 121 young Ontario athletes and is named after one of Canada's great sport figures, James Worrall, who competed for Canada and carried the flag in the 1936 Olympics and went on to become President of the COC and represent Canada as an official at every Olympics through to 1996.  Each year OWSA selects one female and one male from those that apply, each athlete receives $500 to go towards travel, equipment and training costs. Coaching Association of Canada

CAC, in collaboration with its sponsors, recognizes the contributions of coaches and sport administrators working at all levels of sport. All of the following awards are administered by the Coaching Association of Canada at www.coach.ca.

 

Petro Canada Coaching Excellence Awards

Petro Canada recognizes coaches whose athletes have won medals in open world championships, at an Olympic Games, at a Special Olympic World Games, or at Paralympic Games.

 

Investors Group National Sport Administrators Award

The Investors Group Community Sport Administrators Award recognizes the contribution of dedicated volunteers to community sport programs.

 

Geoff Gowan Award

The Geoff Gowan Award recognizes lifetime contribution to coaching development

 

Terry Fox Hall of Fame and King Clancy Award

Categories include, Builder, Achiever and Athlete. The Hall of Fame is located in Metro Hall, Toronto, Ontario.  This award is administered by the Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled People at www.cfpdp.com
