Ontario Recognized at CWBA Awards

At the CWBA Awards, held during Nationals in Manitoba, OWSA was well represented receiving 3 awards.  Ann Marie Hagey received Volunteer of the Year for her hard work with the Twin City Spinners and Ontario's Canada Games Team.  Trevor Kerr received Official of the Year, and Corey Smith received Junior Male Athlete of the Year for his role with the Canada Games Team.

Men's B-Ball Team Wins Bronze

The Ontario Men's Basketball Team traveled to Manitoba enjoying a 5 year run as Canada's Champions.  Head Coach, Chris Chandler, had to make some big adjustments with long-time captain Patrick Anderson taking a break from basketball.  The team has no shortage of leaders with Team Canada veterans Adam Lancia and Chris Stoutenburg leading the charge and picking up first-team allstars.  The team played hard and is looking forward to reclaiming the gold at next year's championships.  Congratulations to all!

Wheelchair Rugby Nationals

Team Ontario's division 1 team headed to Edmonton with the intentions of reclaiming their gold medal.  Unfortunately, the team lost a close semi-final match to Quebec and had to settle for a bronze medal.  It was a different story for Team Ontario’s division 2 team who came into the tournament as defending champions.  The team went undefeated in each of their games before taking BC to overtime and reclaiming the gold medal for the second year in a row.  Both teams represented Ontario very well and congratulations goes to both teams and coaches Harry DeBoer and Mike Imbeault.

Also, Ontario will likely be hosting the National Championships in 2008.  Anyone interested in being part of the organizing committee is asked to contact Michael Suraci at 416-426-7189.

OWSA at the Ontario Sport Awards

The Ontario Sport Awards were held April 26 at the Granite Club in Toronto.  These awards recognize the achievements of Ontario’s athletes during the 2006 calendar year.  OWSA is proud to announce that Bradley Bowden was named Male Athlete with a Disability of the Year for his accomplishments in wheelchair basketball and sledge hockey.  Erika Schmutz was also named as a finalist in the Female Athlete with a Disability of the Year Award for her accomplishments in wheelchair rugby.  Congratulations to Bradley and Erika
